Flu Shots (Influenza)
Influenza is a contagious disease. It is caused by the influenza virus, which spreads from person to person through coughing or sneezing.
Facts:
- It takes 2 weeks to be fully immunized following a flu shot. Protection can last up to a year.
- Flu shots are recommended as late as February.
- Influenza viruses are always changing. Therefore, influenza vaccines are updated every year, and an annual vaccination is recommended.
Treatment:
- Recommended for people 65 year of age and older.
- Residents of long-term care facilities housing person with chronic medical conditions.
- Anyone who wants to reduce their risk of getting the flu.

Pneumonia Shots (pheumnococcal)
Pneumococcal disease kills more people in the United States each year than all other vaccine-preventable diseases combined. Most healthy adults who get the vaccine develop protection to most or all of these types within 2 to 3 weeks of getting the shot.
Facts:
- Pneumococcal disease is responsible for sickness and death every year then any other vaccine-preventable disease.
- The PPV vaccine protects against 23 types of bacteria.
- About 1 out of every 20 people who get pheumococcal pneumonia dies from it.
Treatment:
- Recommended for patients 60 years and older
- Recommended for patients with long-term health problems or conditions that lower the body’s resistance
- Also recommended for many Alaskan Natives and Native American populations

Shingles Shots (Zostavax)
More than 90% of adults have had chickenpox and that puts them at risk for Shingles.
Facts:
- The risk of contracting Shingles increases with age
- Shingles is caused be the same virus that causes chickenpox and can affect a person without warning
- There is no way of predicting who will be affected by Shingles
- 1 Million people a year are affected by Shingles
Treatment:
- Must be for patients 60 years and older
- Not recommended for patients with weakened immune systems
- Talk to your pharmacist about any severe allergies before receiving the shot
