Cholesterol Management
Expected Blood Lipid Values
The National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) Adult Panel of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLB) has recommended the following guidelines in adults.
Total Cholesterol Guidelines:

- Borderline: 200-239 mg/dL
- High: Equal to or greater than 240 mg/dL
HDL Cholesterol Guidelines:
- An HDL cholesterol level below 35 mg/dL is associated with a risk of coronary heart disease (CHD).
- A desirable HDL cholesterol level is greater than 35 mg/dL.
- An HDL level greater than 60 mg/dL decreases CHD risk.
Triglyceride Guidelines:
- Normal: Less than 200 mg/dL
- Borderline: 200-400 mg/dL
- High: Greater than 400 mg/dL
LDL Cholesterol Guidelines:
-Adults with no evidence of CHD:
- Desirable: Less than 130 mg/dL
- Moderate risk: 130-159 mg/dL
- High risk: Equal to or greater than 160 mg/dL
-Adults with evidence of CHD:
- Desirable: Less than 100 mg/dL
- Moderate risk: 100-130 mg/dL
- High risk: Greater than 130 mg/dL
TC/HDL Ratio:
A ratio greater than 6.0 means a high risk of CHD.
Glucose:
Normal fasting glucose levels: 60-95 mg/dL
